Honda CRX SiR

KPH to MPH Conversion on a 90-91 Civic/CRX SiR

Introduction

The Japanese import 90-91 Civic CRX uses an electronic speedo, unlike it's UK/European counterpart that is cable driven. This is easily converted electronically with an appropriate conversion module. Replacement faces are available for this style of cluster but tend not to have good illumination so we will concentrate on the electronic method.

Fitting the converter

Naturally the first thing to do is remove the gauge cluster from the car. Remove the little rubber cover (simply pulls off) from the trip meter's reset button and keep it in a safe place.

Next, you will need to remove the front cover to stick the MPH sticker (provided with the converter kit) over the KPH printing on the face. Press the three clips down at the top...

...and while preventing the top from snapping back into place, press the four clips down at the bottom simultaneously...

...now carefully pull the face off. Keep the face in a safe place, and with the open rear of the housing downwards so as not to collect dust.

Here is the converter we are going to fit, its slightly more expensive than some of the other converters on the market, but they do work extremely well.

Many other converter units I have used flick the speedo needle when the ignition is turned on amongst other issues, and although this is fixable you may as well buy one that works in the first place! I've never had any problems with this particular type at all. The wiring colours are as follows:

Red +12v Supply
Green Ground
Blue MPH Signal Out
Yellow KPH Signal In
