Airbag

Disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least three minutes before beginning work.

If you have not already read them, review the warnings on working with the SRS / Airbag system by clicking here.

Before removing the airbag connector, familiarise yourself with the locking mechanism on the connector by clicking here.

Airbag Removal

Unclip the access panels from each side the side of the steering wheel, then disconnect the connector between the cable reel 2 pin connector and driver’s airbag 2 pin connector.

Remove the covers from the steering wheel, then remove the two Torx bolts using a Torx T30 bit. The Torx bits are tight so you must use an attachment for a ratchet.

When working on the airbag do not sit in the seat on front of it, work on it from side on.

When the screws have been loosened, carefully lift out the driver’s airbag from the steering wheel and remove it from the vehicle.

Never try to pry or lever the airbag from the steering wheel. If the Torx bolts have been removed, and the connector disconnected, the airbag should lift straight out.

Store the airbag face upwards in a safe place, away from children, open flames, any welding operations and nearby obstructions. It should be situated where it cannot fall onto the floor, or experience a shock.

Airbag Installation

Place the new driver’s airbag in the steering wheel, and secure it with new Torx bolts.

Do not turn the ignition on with the airbag disconnected or you will cause a fault to be logged!

After connecting the airbag, confirm proper system operation:

  • Turn the ignition switch ON (II) and the SRS indicator light should come on for about six seconds and then go off.

  • Make sure the horn button works.

If the SRS indicator does not go out, recheck the SRS connectors you unplugged. Any fault with the SRS system will be logged, and cause the fault light to illuminate.

The fault light will continue to illuminate, even if the fault has been rectified. Once a fault has been logged, fault light will always illuminate and can only be extinguished by resetting the airbag system. You should consult a suitably trained mechanic to reset the airbag system.

Bear in mind that if the fault light is illuminated, the airbag system may not deploy in an accident.
